Zeeland's beach oil spread from one spot to three areas in four days: check your own stretch on the day

The province of Zeeland issued an update on Wednesday 23 September 2026: that day's inspections found oil washed up at more points along the Zeeland coast than were previously known. The first reports came last Saturday from Westkapelle, after which oil turned up on beaches along the Walcheren coast as far as Vrouwenpolder. Wednesday's inspections added small quantities at Banjaard Badstrand on Noord-Beveland and at the Verdronken Zwarte Polder, part of the Nieuwvliet Bad Oost bathing water location in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The province has issued a warning for those bathing water sites and advises anyone at the beach to avoid contact with the oil and not to swim where oil or residue is visible. Part of it is heavy fuel oil, found mostly among washed-up seaweed. Its origin is not yet known.

• The list changed twice in four days, so timing is itself the thing to judge by: on Saturday it was Westkapelle alone, by Wednesday it covered three areas. The province states it will keep inspecting over the coming days and will issue fresh warnings and update the spread if there is reason to. A list published on Wednesday may therefore already be out of date by Saturday. Checking the official bathing water site or the Zwemwater app for your own stretch on the morning you travel beats following any ready-made list.
• The easiest line to skim past is the one about seaweed. The wording is that the heavy fuel oil sits particularly among the washed-up weed, which means clean-looking sand says nothing about the pile you are standing next to. That matters most with a dog or with small children: the province asks directly that children and pets be kept away from the oil and from seaweed with oil visible in it.
• If you do meet it, the official instruction is three sentences long: do not touch washed-up oil, do not try to clean it up yourself, and if it reaches your skin remove it as soon as possible and wash the skin well with soap and water. Leaving the clearing alone has a practical reason. Rijkswaterstaat is working with local and regional bodies to remove it, and scattered amateur clean-ups spread the oil further.
• If Zeeland was already the plan this weekend, what is affected is those stretches of beach rather than the whole province. The warning names the Walcheren coast between Westkapelle and Vrouwenpolder, Banjaard Badstrand and the Verdronken Zwarte Polder. Other coastal towns, the dike routes and indoor plans are not on the list. The same notice says the spread is still moving, though, so confirm your own stretch again just before you set out.
