A boat to the Engelsmanplaat sandbank, then about 90 minutes on foot across the Wadden seabed, around five hours in all; this weekend's two trips are full, 4 October still has room.
What you need to know
The Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage site whose seabed you can walk at low tide: wadlopen. The seal mudflat walk run by Wadloopcentrum Pieterburen is the gentlest way in: you board the Silverwind in the fishing harbour of Lauwersoog in Groningen, sail to the Engelsmanplaat sandbank, climb down a ladder and wade a short stretch onto the seabed, then walk with a guide for about an hour and a half past oyster and mussel beds before sailing back, around five hours in total. The organiser says there is a good chance of seeing seals on the sandbanks on the way out and back. Adults pay EUR 47, children up to 12 pay EUR 27, and the minimum age is 4. When we checked the booking system on 25 September, both trips this weekend had no places left, while the 07:30 sailing on 4 October had 46 places.
- Why the times look odd: the seabed can only be walked at low tide, and the organiser states that departure times follow the tide and cannot be moved earlier or later. The same route leaves at 14:30 on 26 September, 15:15 on 27 September and 07:30 on 4 October. In October the booking calendar opens only that one date.
- Work out your own departure and cost: leave home at 07:30 minus 15 minutes (the organiser asks you to arrive early) minus your route planner's driving time to Lauwersoog; if it says two hours, you leave at 05:15. The cost is (people aged 13 and over x EUR 47) + (children aged 4 to 12 x EUR 27), so two adults with two primary-school children pay EUR 148. Children under 4 cannot take part.
- Who it suits: families who want their children to see wild seals without a long walk; the organiser describes the route as easy enough for grandparents. The scenery needs no Dutch, but the official page does not mention English guiding, so if you want to follow the explanations, ask when you book.
- Before you go: shoes are where people get turned away. The organiser recommends high sneakers with sturdy socks, no wellies, sandals or water shoes, and states that a guide may refuse you without proper footwear. Wear shorts or sports leggings rather than jeans and leave dry clothes and a towel on board. Trips are cancelled for wind force 6 or higher, thunder or poor visibility, so check the evening before. Park by the water opposite NG Shipyards at Haven 30; the Silverwind lies at jetty I.

Hokimi field note: the organiser's own advice is to buy a cheap pair of high basketball shoes for the day, because salt water dissolves the glue in old shoes and the soles can come off halfway across; do not count on wearing them again afterwards.
