Brussels Atomium from EUR 17.00 covers two venues: both is EUR 8.50 each, one is EUR 17.00

Take the train from the Netherlands to Brussels and the landmark you recognise first is not the Grand Place, it is the hundred-metre cluster of metal spheres out at Heysel. The Atomium went up for the 1958 World Fair and was only ever meant to be temporary; like the Eiffel Tower, the city decided it liked the thing and kept it.

This ticket is not only those nine spheres. It covers admission to the Atomium and to the Design Museum Brussels, including the permanent and temporary exhibitions at both venues, from EUR 17.00 on the day of checking, rated 4.4 from 4,392 reviews.

So the question to settle first is not whether the view is worth it but whether you will actually go into both. Do both and EUR 17.00 works out at EUR 8.50 a venue. Do only the Atomium and you have paid EUR 17.00 for one. The two buildings sit on the same site, a few minutes apart on foot.

• Divide it by your own day. EUR 17.00 divided by the number of venues you will really walk into is your true price per venue: EUR 8.50 if both, EUR 17.00 if one. A day trip to Brussels usually also has the Grand Place and a meal in it, so look at your timetable and see whether the Heysel stop has room for two.
• The ticket cannot be refunded or moved. The page states it is nonrefundable and that rescheduling is not possible. For anyone coming over and back in a day, one late train writes the whole ticket off, so do not put it in the last slot of the itinerary, and put the date in your calendar the moment you book, because there is no second attempt.
• Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. On the day of checking the hours were 10:00 to 18:00, so the real deadline is 17:30. The page separately warns that on weekends and holidays the wait at both the entrance and the lift runs longer. Put nonrefundable, a 17:30 deadline and longer weekend queues side by side and a late weekend slot is the one combination to avoid.
• Two things that stop you at the door. No backpacks or large items are allowed inside, so sort your luggage out first. And on accessibility, only the upper sphere can be reached, which anyone travelling with a wheelchair or a pushchair needs to weigh before booking.
