Centre Pompidou lends Matisse's La Blouse roumaine to H'ART in Amsterdam from 3 October: adults EUR 29.50, Museumkaart holders add EUR 7

This Saturday, 3 October, H'ART Museum on the Amstel in Amsterdam opens Chez Matisse: more than 80 works, all from the Centre Pompidou in Paris, with Matisse himself alongside the artists he influenced, among them Rothko, Barnett Newman and Picasso. The piece worth the trip is La Blouse roumaine, a portrait painted in April 1940 on the eve of the war that rarely leaves Paris. The show runs until 14 February 2027, so there is time, but entry is booked by time slot and the prices come in several tiers: adults EUR 29.50, students and CJP holders EUR 18.50, anyone 17 or under free, and Museumkaart holders still add a EUR 7 surcharge. It suits anyone who wants one big exhibition this autumn and wants to know first whether a museum card is worth buying. Next step: choose a date and slot on the museum's site this week.

• Why this one: the exhibition is curated with the Centre Pompidou, which holds one of the most important Matisse collections in the world. Besides La Blouse roumaine, the museum lists The Violinist at the Window from 1918 and Still Life with Green Sideboard from 1928; the window is the thread through the show, the device Matisse used to link inside and outside.
• Work out whether a Museumkaart is worth it for this show: without one, an adult pays EUR 29.50; buying a new card costs EUR 75 plus the EUR 7 surcharge, EUR 82 in all. The extra EUR 82 - 29.50 = EUR 52.50 has to come back through other museum entries over the next year. If the museums you plan to visit add up to more than EUR 52.50, buy the card; if not, just book the exhibition. If you already have a card, this show costs EUR 7.
• Who it suits: families gain most, since anyone 17 or under is free; students pay EUR 18.50 with CJP or a student card; Amsterdam residents with a Stadspas enter free; visitors with an I amsterdam City Card add EUR 7. Parents visiting from abroad can pair it with the Waterlooplein market on the same morning.
• Check before you go: free or not, everyone enters in a booked slot, and the last entry is half an hour before closing. Take tram 14 or metro 51, 53 or 54 to Waterlooplein and use the Hortusplantsoen exit. By car or taxi, get out at Nieuwe Keizersgracht 1, because vehicles cannot reach the entrance.
