Van Gogh Museum shows all 100 of Yoshitoshi's One Hundred Aspects of the Moon from 1 October, Sun Wukong and Cao Cao included, at EUR 25 for adults and free under 18

The least expected place to meet the Monkey King in the Netherlands may be the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. From 1 October the museum shows, for the first time, the complete One Hundred Aspects of the Moon by the Japanese printmaker Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892): 100 prints, each with a moon, of warriors, lovers and supernatural figures from Japanese and Chinese history, myth and folklore. In one, Sun Wukong chases the jade rabbit in the moon; in another, the warlord Cao Cao stands at the prow of a boat under a rising moon. The series comes from the estate of collector Elise Wessels, placed with the museum through the Dutch State, and is unusually complete; Van Gogh himself owned five Yoshitoshi prints. It runs until 4 January 2027 in a compact gallery, good for spotting familiar stories with parents or children. Next step: book a timed ticket online.

• Why it is worth a trip: it is the first time the full series hangs at the Van Gogh Museum, all 100 prints together. Yoshitoshi is seen as the last great master of traditional Japanese printmaking, bringing Western perspective and realism into ukiyo-e; the flat areas of colour, bold compositions and strong outlines Van Gogh took from Japanese prints came from collections like this, so the upstairs galleries read differently afterwards.
• Work out the family ticket: total = adults x 25 + students at EU/EEA institutions x 16 + other students x 25 + under-18s x 0. The student rate only applies to students enrolled at an institution in the EU or EEA, so a visiting student from China or the UK pays the adult price. Museumkaart holders go free and CJP holders pay EUR 11.
• Going after 16 October gets you more: one ticket covers the permanent collection and every exhibition with no surcharge, and a second show, Whistler. Dandy en dwarsdenker, opens on 16 October and runs until 10 January 2027, so from the 16th a EUR 25 ticket covers both exhibitions. There are also mindful art-viewing sessions on 2 and 30 October.
• Check before you go: all tickets are sold online only with a start time, and Museumkaart holders must also book a free timed ticket; without a time slot you cannot get in. The museum warns that criminals sell fake tickets, so buy only at tickets.vangoghmuseum.nl or the official resellers it lists.
