Amsterdam in 1652 as VR for EUR 18.50: minutes east of Centraal Station and nothing to listen to

ENTR VR Museum on Oosterdokskade in Amsterdam turns the city of 1652 into something you can walk into.

1652 is the year Amsterdam was cutting the concentric canal ring that took it from a medieval port to the shape it still has, so what the headset shows is not a vague idea of old Holland but the street you are standing on as it was then.

On the day of checking, the regular ticket for 18 and over is EUR 18.50, with sessions scheduled through to 21 May 2027. The price is the easy part; the harder question is which part of your day it should take.

• It is one of the few indoor stops that does not run on language. VR is watched and walked, not listened to, which is a real difference for anyone whose Dutch is not there yet and who does not want to spend an afternoon concentrating on English either. For a visiting parent or a friend who has just landed it is far easier to plan than a commentary-led museum.
• Price it per unit of time before deciding. EUR 18.50 buys a fixed-length VR session, not a permanent collection you can wander for an afternoon. Set next to a city museum charging by the day, the question is what you want from this one hour rather than which ticket is cheaper. If the plan is to fill half a day, this is not that ticket.
• The location decides where it fits in the day. Oosterdokskade 131b, 1011 DL, is on the eastern side of Centraal Station, a few minutes on foot. That makes it a strong fit for the hour just after you step off a train or while waiting for a late one, rather than something to travel across the city for.
• Check two things before booking. This regular ticket states 18 and over, so anyone bringing children should confirm on the booking page whether another ticket type applies; and although the run stretches to May 2027, each day is sold in time slots and weekend and holiday slots fill first. Fix the date and the slot together, then build the rest of the day around it.
