Van Gogh's Poplars near Nuenen back on show at Depot Boijmans after three years of restoration: free under 18

On the second floor of Depot Boijmans, the mirrored bowl-shaped building in Rotterdam's Museumpark, hangs a Van Gogh that has only just come out of treatment: Poplars near Nuenen from 1885. It spent three years in the Depot's own painting restoration studio and now hangs directly opposite that studio, on show up to and including 7 February 2027. The painting has a history of its own. In 1903 it became the first Van Gogh in a public Dutch collection, donated by 26 art lovers, and Van Gogh called it a Symphony in Yellow in a letter to his brother. Under-18s enter the Depot free, adults pay EUR 20, and the building is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00 with a booked time slot.

• What the restoration actually changed: yellowed varnish layers and old retouches were removed, and the research turned up later brushstrokes, unexpected drip marks and problems with paint adhesion, bringing the picture back towards the yellow Van Gogh had in mind in October 1885. Looking at it from across the corridor means seeing the result and the room where the work was done at the same time, an angle an ordinary gallery wall does not give you.
• Work out your own family's ticket: adults x EUR 20, under-18s x EUR 0, Museumkaart holders EUR 0, students and CJP EUR 10.50. Two adults with two children pay EUR 40 today. During the Marisol exhibition, from 9 October 2026 to 29 March 2027, a EUR 2.50 surcharge applies per ticket. The museum's exemptions include children up to 18 and the Rotterdampas, but the Museumkaart is not on that list, so the same family pays EUR 45 from 9 October and a Museumkaart holder goes from EUR 0 to EUR 2.50.
• Who it suits: a wet weekend when you want somewhere indoors that needs no Dutch and will not bore the children. The Depot presents itself as the world's first publicly accessible art storage facility, and it has an education studio where, in the museum's words, families with children of all ages discover through play how thousands of artworks are kept in top condition and which professions that takes. The ticket also covers the roof during regular opening hours.
• Before you go: without a time slot you cannot enter, so book online; it is closed on Mondays; the building is cashless, card or app only. Take metro A, B or C to Eendrachtsplein, or tram 7 to Museumpark. Parking Museumpark under the Depot has limited space because of construction, and the museum does not recommend street parking.
