Railway Museum Utrecht is €19.50 from age 4: the Museumkaart is free but the physical card and a slot are not optional

Het Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht sits inside an 1874 station building with real steam locomotives standing in the halls, and for a child who likes trains it is the sort of place that swallows an afternoon. Two of its entry rules catch people out, and neither has anything to do with money; both are about preparation. First, every visitor has to reserve a time slot in advance. Reserving is free, but it applies even when you already hold a valid ticket or a Museum Card. Second, anyone entering free on a Museumkaart, an ICOM card or a VriendenLoterij VIP card has to show the physical card, and the museum states plainly that photographs and scans are not accepted. Put together, that means turning up with a picture of the card on your phone and booking at the door can fail on both counts.

• Work out the family total: €19.50 each from age 4, free for children of 3 and under. Two adults with two children over 4 comes to 4 × €19.50 = €78.00. Arriving by car adds a parking ticket from €16.50, sold only at the museum itself, which takes the day to €94.50; in other words parking costs more than bringing one more child.
• Which cards give free entry: Museumkaart, ICOM and the VriendenLoterij VIP card all do, a U-Pas is valid, and NS employees pay €10.00 on showing their staff card. All of them still need a booked time slot, and the first three need the physical card in hand.
• When it opens: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00, plus Mondays during every official Dutch school holiday. It also opens on Easter and Whit Sunday and Monday, on both Christmas days and on New Year's Day. The one fixed closure is King's Day, 27 April.
• The practical side of booking: tickets and reservations arrive by email and need to open on your phone at the entrance. Time slots can be changed or cancelled through the link in that email, but purchased tickets cannot be cancelled and stay valid for one year, so booking the slot first and settling the date afterwards leaves you more room.

Hokimi field note: two things before you leave the house stop the wasted trip, namely putting the physical card in your bag and checking the reservation email actually opens on your phone.
