Toverland's Halloween Days pumpkin farm this autumn break: pick 11 or 20 October and book 7 days ahead, and two adults and two kids pay EUR 133, EUR 45 less than on the 24th

Taking children to a theme park in the autumn break comes with two worries: the ticket is pricier than expected, and once it gets dark the park turns into a teenage scare zone that makes small kids cry. Toverland in Sevenum, Limburg, separates the two this year. Its Halloween Days are a daytime Halloween for under-12s: the pumpkin farm has moved into a new Halloween Village built in a 7-hectare cornfield with thousands of pumpkins, plus a new corn maze called Magisch Mais Mysterie, Morrels BOEderij where children hide and scare their parents, and a hay-bale maze called Little Pumpkins for the youngest, all included in the normal ticket. The catch is that on 13 of the 17 days the evening continues with Halloween Nights for ages 12 and up, and those days cost the most. It suits families with young children; the next step is to pick a daytime-only day and book it 7 days ahead.

• Choosing the day is choosing the price: on the official calendar on 30 September, the daytime-only days of 4, 11 and 20 October and 8 November cost EUR 37.50 per adult and EUR 29 per child of 90 to 140 cm when booked online at least 7 days ahead; 17, 21, 24 and 31 October, when Halloween Nights follows, cost EUR 49.50 and EUR 39.50, with no early-booking price.
• Work out your own family: total = people over 140 cm x that day's price + children of 90 to 140 cm x that day's child price + parking for one car. Two adults and two children on the 20th, booked early, pay 2 x 37.50 + 2 x 29 = EUR 133; on the 24th it is 2 x 49.50 + 2 x 39.50 = EUR 178, a difference of EUR 45. Note the price goes by height, not age: a child over 140 cm pays the adult price, and under 90 cm is free but still needs a reserved date.
• Why the daytime-only days suit small children: the park closes at 18:00, so you miss the Halloween parade that starts at 18:00 and the evening scare zones; on Nights dates some paid haunted houses already open from 15:00, and the parade runs from Port Laguna towards Land van Toos. Families in the south, on holiday 10 to 18 October, can take Sunday the 11th; families in the middle and north, off 17 to 25 October, can take Tuesday the 20th, which is also HalloWiebe Day with character meet-and-greets at 12:30 and 15:30.
• Before you go: every ticket needs a date chosen online first, tickets cannot be refunded, and the park may stop letting people in when it gets too busy; under-12s may dress up and wear face paint, from 12 they may not. By train, change at Horst-Sevenum station to bus 79 or 679, which stops across the road from the park.
