Fair de Marlequi in Warmenhuizen on 19 and 20 September: 3.50 euro for adults, children free, stalls under glass

On 19 and 20 September, both days from 11.00 to 17.00, Tuinderij de Marlequi in Warmenhuizen in Noord-Holland holds Fair de Marlequi. More than eighty growers, makers and small traders set up inside and around the nursery's greenhouses, which makes this an autumn market that still works in the rain. Entry is 3.50 euro a head and children come in free. Beyond the edible pumpkins and odd gourds there is pumpkin soup, jam and wine, and you can cut your own grapes in the greenhouse. There is face painting for children, coffee with apple tart on arrival and a Komado barbecue making burgers to order. Children get their own greenhouse bay for pumpkin carving, hollowing and cutting with the team before seeing it lit in a dark room. Next step: turn up and pay at the entrance.

• Why it is different: the stalls are not pitched on a square but inside a working nursery's greenhouses, with grape vines and the autumn crop along the aisles, so both the temperature and the footing are kinder than an open-air market. The covered pick-your-own vinery holds 63 vines of Boskoops Glorie, an old Dutch variety grown unsprayed, and stays open from September into November. (source 1)
• When and where: both days run 11.00 to 17.00 on the Trambaan, with the village reached by turning off the N9 at the Schoorldammerbrug. Outside this weekend the pumpkin barn on the yard stays open every day until 11 November from 9:00 to 18:00, and on ordinary days you do not need a market ticket to walk in and look at the pumpkins. • Who it is for: families with school-age children who want them doing something rather than filing past stalls, and anyone who would rather not be rained on, because the main floor is under glass. The carving is laid on for children, but the official page states no minimum age and no group size, so ask at that bay when you arrive which slots are running that day. (source 1)
• Check before you go: the pumpkin-carving workshop normally costs 12.50 euro a person, and that includes crisps, a drink and the pumpkin itself. The nursery says it charges a reduced rate during the fair but does not publish that figure, so do not budget 12.50 as fixed and ask on arrival. Work it out: entry is adults times 3.50 euro with children free. Two adults and three children is 7.00 euro, and that is the whole fixed cost of getting in. If you want every child to carve a pumpkin, the normal rate is 3 times 12.50, so 37.50 euro, giving 44.50 euro with entry; during the fair that line is discounted but the nursery does not print the number, so put the figure you are quoted on the day back into the sum. There is also a route that skips the fair completely: the pumpkin barn is open every day until 11 November from 9:00 to 18:00, where looking at and buying pumpkins costs nothing at the gate, and the vinery runs into November too. So the real decision is whether you are buying the pumpkin or buying the eighty stalls, two bands and an afternoon under glass.
