Walking into the Zaanse Schans is free: the 29.50 euro ticket buys eight interiors, so count the ones you will enter

Take the train from Amsterdam Centraal to Koog-Zaandijk and walk over, or drive to Schansend 7 in the satnav. Once you are there, walking into the area itself costs nothing. The official FAQ uses the phrase freely accessible: the paths between the windmills, the outsides of the green wooden houses, the displays in the workshop doorways, none of it sits behind a gate. What you pay for is on the other side of a door.

The sum is one division and only you know the denominator: 29.50 divided by the number of interiors you will really walk into = the cost of each one. All eight comes to 3.69 euro a door, which is good value. Two of them, say the Zaans Museum and one mill, is 14.75 euro each, and at that point buying singly at the counter is better. With children it matters more, because the 20.00 euro child ticket shares the same denominator as a five-year-old's patience, and eight interiors is usually more than that patience holds.

If you drive, put the parking on the same bill. Two adults and two children arriving by car: 2 x 29.50 + 2 x 20.00 + 15.00 = 114.00 euro, before anybody eats. The same four people, the same car, walking only the free area, spend 15.00 euro on the day. The gap between those two figures is not about whether the place is worth visiting. It is about whether you go through the doors, and the official page separates those two things where most itinerary write-ups blur them.

The smallest number is the one people forget: the toilets are 1 euro a visit, cards only. Across a day out with children that repeats a few times, and the coins in your pocket are no help here.

Hokimi field note: the two mills of choice are the ones open that day, not a fixed pair. So if there is a particular mill you came for, ask at the entrance which ones are open today before you decide how to use the ticket. Doing it the other way round is how the ticket gets wasted.
