What you need to know
If a child has only seen giraffes on a screen, the memory that makes wildlife feel real may come not from adding another species but from approaching the same habitat through a car window, a footpath and the water. Safaripark Beekse Bergen is the only safari in the Netherlands explored by car, on foot, by bus and by boat. More than 100 species turn the day into a change of distance and perspective rather than a sequence of enclosures.
Its distinction is not only scale. Large animals are often more active during an early self-drive; the walking safari then lets children discover details around adventure trails and play areas, while a ranger interprets riverside wildlife during the boat safari. The park participates in international breeding and species-conservation programmes, so seeing a lion, giraffe or black rhinoceros can become a conversation about why protection matters after the photographs are taken.
A second common scene is a three-generation day out. Older relatives can conserve energy in the car, children can move freely during the walking section, and everyone reunites for a roughly 30-minute boat journey. The emotional value is that the family does not have to travel at one speed. Note that the bus safari operates only from 1 October to 31 March, so summer visitors should not treat it as a guaranteed option.
- Address: Beekse Bergen 1, 5081 NJ Hilvarenbeek; from Tilburg Centraal, continue by bus 142 or 143 to the Safaripark stop.
- Entry currently starts at EUR 29.50. It suits families, three-generation groups and visitors ready for a full day; limited walkers can prioritise car and boat.
- Before booking, check date, child ages, parking or public transport, the day's safari programme, accessibility and cancellation terms; most visitors spend the whole day.
Hokimi field note: arrive early for the self-drive while more animals may be active, then walk, eat and take the boat. A route with changing rhythms feels more like safari than racing through a checklist.
