No plate, no public road: identify a special moped before booking RDW

Since 1 July, a special moped without a plate may not use public roads and risks a fine. Owners should match the model against RDW photographs before booking an inspection station.

• The rule makes road approval visible through a plate and register. RDW reported more than 4,400 applications by June, including over 900 Kickbikes, so rental and family-use vehicles can also fall within the change.
• The former €18 online route has ended. The current path includes vehicle identification and safety checks, registration, putting it in a name, making the plate and passing the plate plus meldcode to the insurer.
• RDW accepts only listed vehicles whose name and appearance match. A failed inspection can still cost money, and most ordinary e-scooters do not become legal merely through this route.
