Ommen blueberry self-pick: learn ripeness before pricing the basket
Mon/Wed/Fri/Sat, EUR6.50/kg
Deal Highlights
Children discover that blue does not automatically mean ripe. A sweet berry has even colour and releases with a light touch; varieties ripening in sequence turn one basket into a lesson in season.
Details
Natuurlijkerwijs in Ommen is open for self-pick on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 09:00 to 17:00 at EUR6.50 per kilogram. Check the day’s crop notice before travelling.
- The farm uses neither synthetic nor organic pesticides and adds no fertiliser, focusing on soil and plant resilience. Fruit can therefore look less uniform than supermarket packs.
- Northland starts early in July with small sweet berries; Blue Crop follows from mid-July with sweet-tart balance. Elizabeth, very large Chandler and later Liberty extend August.
- Several varieties lengthen the season but make different rows ready each week. Taste only where permitted, then judge even colour, feel and how easily fruit leaves the stem.
- The address is Balkerweg 37. Bring a shallow, wide container to avoid crushing fruit, wear field shoes and keep leaves, stems and unripe berries out before weighing.
Hokimi field note: Give the child a small box and one rule: pick only fruit that releases lightly. At home, compare sizes and ask whether the largest berry is actually the sweetest.
