Maastricht's North Caves for 9,95 euro: 70 minutes underground with no phone signal at all

Inside the Sint-Pietersberg south of Maastricht runs a whole network of marl tunnels cut by hand. The Grotten Noord tour on Tiqets is 9,95 euro and lasts 70 minutes, rated 4,6 from 88 reviews. The official description is blunt about the appeal: it is pitch dark down there and there is not a single bar of phone reception, and the tour covers what was hidden in these tunnels during the Second World War. Guides work in Dutch, English and German, the route is wheelchair accessible, entry is by smartphone ticket and you are asked to arrive ten minutes early.

Worth knowing before you book: the same entrance address at Luikerweg 71, run by the same operator Explore Maastricht, also sells a second tour at exactly the same 9,95 euro. That is Fort Sint Pieter, the eighteenth-century fortress, which covers the years of siege, gives you the view from the top of the hill and takes you into the cool tunnels linking it to the hillside. It runs 60 minutes, again in Dutch, English and German. The difference is not price. It is three things: 70 minutes against 60, wheelchair access, which the caves have and the fort does not, and the size of the review sample, 88 for the caves against 13 for the fort. Both average 4,6, but an average over 13 is a hint rather than a verdict. The ticket pages list the two separately and have never put those three lines beside each other.

The sum worth doing is not about the ticket, because both tickets are 9,95 euro. Coming from the Randstad, the fare is the large number in the day, so the arithmetic is (return fare + 9,95 × people) ÷ the hours you actually spend underground.
