The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam sells no tickets at the door, only online: every Tuesday at 10am CEST all tickets become available for a visit six weeks later. So the date to remember is not the day you want to go but the Tuesday morning six weeks before it…

What you need to know

The Anne Frank House stands at Westermarkt 20 in Amsterdam and opens daily from 9:00 to 22:00, but plenty of visitors only discover at the door that they cannot get in. The museum puts it plainly: tickets are sold through its website only and never at the door. The part that catches people out is the release mechanism. Every Tuesday at 10am CEST, all tickets for a visit exactly six weeks later go on sale at once. Today is Tuesday 8 September, so this morning at ten the date that opened was 20 October. The first thing to do is therefore not to buy a ticket but to count six weeks back from the day you want, and be at a screen that Tuesday morning. Adults pay 16.50 euro, ages 10 to 17 pay 7.00 and ages 0 to 9 pay 1.00, each including a 1.00 euro booking fee.

  • The release rule, in the museum's own words: every Tuesday at 10am CEST all tickets become available for a visit six weeks later. The bookable window rolls forward; you cannot pick a date months out. (source 1)
  • Three price bands, each including the 1.00 euro booking fee: 16.50 euro for adults, 7.00 for ages 10 to 17 and 1.00 for ages 0 to 9. Two adults and one twelve-year-old comes to 40.00 euro. (source 1)
  • Museumkaart holders should read this twice: the card does not let you walk in. It costs 1.00 euro including the booking fee, and the museum states you always have to book online for a specified date and time. (source 1)
  • Opening hours run daily from 9:00 to 22:00, and the late slots are usually easier to get than the daytime ones — worth aiming for if you are at work when the Tuesday release happens. (source 2)

Hokimi field note: treat this like a timed ticket release, not like visiting a museum. Fix the day you want, count six weeks back, and set an alarm for 09:55 that Tuesday. Book for everyone in one go, because the time slot is chosen for the whole group. If you are bringing a child under ten the fare is only 1.00 euro, but that is a child ticket, not free entry — book it with the rest.
