VINZ Salado ART 2 bike lock, 120 cm: insurers read the stars, not the price

Leaving a second-hand bike at a station, locking it, and coming back to a front wheel is one of the most common unplanned costs of a first year in the Netherlands. Dutch bicycle insurance and theft clauses generally do not ask what you paid for the lock. They ask whether it carries ART certification, and ART is graded in stars: more stars means a higher resistance grade. The policy names a star count, not a brand and not a price.

This VINZ Salado states its case plainly on the product page: ART 2 certification, a 120 cm chain, hardened steel (gehard staal), black, with an ANWB test result of Goed noted alongside. It is rated 4,5 out of 5 from 628 reviews, which is a large enough sample to trust. The price is 29,95 euro against a strike price of 31,95. Those two euro are not a reason to buy today and should not enter the decision at all.

The cost of a durable item belongs spread over time: 29,95 divided by the number of years you expect to keep this bike is your lock cost per year. Three years makes it 10 euro a year, six years makes it 5. That sum only means something once the star rating matches your policy, because a two-star lock under a three-star requirement pays out nothing after a theft, and the money is simply gone.

• Do the free step first: open your policy or rental contract, search for ART, and see whether it says 2 stars or 3. E-bikes and expensive bikes usually demand more; ordinary city bikes are commonly two stars and up
• Divide 29,95 by the years you expect to ride this bike for a cost per year, then set that beside the replacement price of the whole bike, where it will usually land well under 5 percent
• Length decides use: 120 cm only reaches around your own frame or a slim post. Locking bike and rack together, or two bikes at once, needs a longer size
• A 31,95 strike against 29,95 means this is not a discount-driven purchase, so do not let two euro move your timing

One more thing newcomers miss: many Dutch policies require two locks, or one ART lock plus the frame's own ring lock (ringslot), and the built-in ring lock alone usually does not count. That condition is written in the same policy, and reading it takes less time than arguing about it afterwards.
