A child free of the car seat at home may need one again in Germany. This 100-150 cm i-Size booster is EUR 89.00 from bol, rated 4.6 from 65 reviews, with both thresholds, a years-of-use sum and German fines.

What you need to know

An autumn-break drive to Cologne or the Ruhr, and the child in the back is 1.38 metres tall. In the Netherlands that child left the car seat behind a while ago; once the car crosses the border, German rules put them back in it for as long as they are under 12 and shorter than 1.50 metres. Same child, same car, and a 15 cm difference in the threshold on either side of the border.

Maxi-Cosi makes car seats from newborn carriers all the way to age 12; the manufacturer listed on the bol page is Dorel Europe in Helmond, the Netherlands. The RodiFix M i-Size is its high-back booster for 100 to 150 cm, approved under i-Size (R129): the child wears the car's three-point belt, and the seat itself can lock to the car with ISOFIX or be held by the belt alone in a car without it. The headrest has 10 positions; a button at the back lifts the headrest and the side wings together. The sides carry the brand's G-CELL side-impact structure, and the covers are made from 100% recycled fabric according to Maxi-Cosi. On the day of checking bol sells it itself for EUR 89, rated 4.6 from 65 reviews, in stock for next-day delivery. The EUR 129.99 on the page is the manufacturer's recommended price, not an earlier bol price, so this is not a discount.

For the weekly run to swimming or a Saturday in the grandparents' older car it works the same way: without ISOFIX points, the belt holds the seat and the child together. The limits are concrete. The seat weighs 5.7 kg and measures 54 by 49 by 60 cm, so it will not go in cabin luggage and suits road trips rather than fly-and-rent holidays; with three people on the back seat, 49 cm of width gets tight; and a child under 100 cm or 15 kg is not ready for this stage yet.

  • First check whether this trip needs it: the Dutch threshold is 1.35 metres; in Germany it is under 12 and under 1.50 metres, and reaching either one ends the requirement. Put your child's current height against each country's line and you know whether the seat travels with you.
  • Then work out how many years it lasts: years = (150 minus current height in cm) divided by how many cm your child grows a year (take this year's check-up figure minus last year's); cost per year = 89 divided by years. At 125 cm and 6 cm a year that is about 4 years, roughly EUR 22 a year.
  • What Germany charges: according to ADAC, an unsuitable seat costs EUR 30 or 35; a child with no restraint at all costs EUR 60 plus one point on the licence.
  • Against the cheaper option: in the same 100 to 150 cm stage, the Puck Lewis i-Size on bol is EUR 34.99, rated 4.7 from 34 reviews. What the RodiFix M adds is ISOFIX fixing, the 10-position headrest and 30 days of free returns with bol as the seller. For a seat used only now and then, the cheaper one is also legal.

Hokimi tip: measure your child against a door frame before you leave and keep the height and birthday in your phone. In Germany, turning 12 or passing 1.50 metres, whichever comes first, ends the seat requirement; until one of them happens, the seat crosses the border with the car.
