Working late on the sofa on an October evening, the thermostat is still at 20 degrees and your fingers go cold first. The Dutch energy advice body Milieu Centraal puts the rule plainly: every degree lower on the thermostat cuts the gas used for heating by 10 percent, and it suggests an extra warm layer to make up for it.
