The Philips HC5630 clipper at 34.99 euro: a Dutch barber charges 30.50, so the second home cut pays it off

Dutch haircut prices are published. A salon called Kapper Jos Willemse puts its 2026 men's tariff on its own site: 30.50 euro for Coupe knippen, 35.00 euro for Wassen en knippen. This clipper costs 34.99 euro. Set the two numbers side by side and the answer writes itself.

The sum: 34.99 divided by what you paid for your last haircut = the number of home cuts to break even. Put that published tariff through it and 34.99 divided by 30.50 is 1.15, which means the machine is paid off on the second cut you do yourself. For someone who cuts six times a year, the first year after that is close to a hundred and fifty euro kept. No product page runs this division, because the second number it needs is in your own memory.

The part that does not hold has to be said plainly, or the sum is a lie. Twenty-eight lengths plus comb attachments deliver an even clipper cut, not the cut a barber makes. A fade, scissor work, the sideburn line and the line at the neck do not appear because you changed comb size, and the back of your head is a place you cannot see, so somebody has to run it for you. What this machine actually replaces is the four-to-six-week maintenance trim, not the appointment where someone shapes your hair. The test is direct: if most of your time in the chair is spent while somebody runs a clipper over the whole head, the division holds for you. If what you want is a layered shape, it does not.

One local detail belongs in the sum too. On most Dutch tariff lists knippen and wassen en knippen are two different prices, 4.50 euro apart, and cutting at home means you were going to wash your own hair anyway. So the figure to divide by is the lower one. Using the wash-and-blow-dry price makes the payback look better than it is.
