Utrecht rainy-day museum: a bag of look, smell and do prompts opens up art
Ages 6-12; game free with entry
Deal Highlights
“Wat zien wij?” asks families to interpret art together through questions and sensory tasks rather than requiring art-history knowledge; the game works across the museum.
Details
Centraal Museum offers the family game daily from 11:00 to 17:00 for ages 6-12 with parents or grandparents. It is free with valid museum admission, collected at the entrance and needs no booking.
- The bag contains looking, smelling and doing prompts: choose an artwork as inspiration for a singer’s outfit or debate whether a home becomes a museum when art moves in. Adults participate and there is no single answer.
- The museum connects art and design to Utrecht’s story. The game replaces a one-way explanation with shared observation, useful for first-time visitors and multilingual families.
- The game is free but museum admission is not automatically free. Check tickets or Museumkaart rules, opening hours and rainy-day cloakroom time before leaving.
Hokimi field note: Do not rush every card; let the child choose one artwork they would take home and use three prompts around it for a stronger memory than covering every room.
