Seal centre WEC in Lauwersoog: see seals go back to sea on 26 September for 85 euro, or walk a sandbank on 4 October for 29.95

The seal hospital of Zeehondencentrum Pieterburen now sits inside the WEC, the Wadden Sea World Heritage Centre in the harbour of Lauwersoog: sick or orphaned seals are nursed there and, once fit, taken by boat to a sandbank in the Wadden Sea and released. A release trip on 26 September, 14:30 to 17:30, costs 85 euro for adults and 55 for ages four to twelve; a sandbank clean-up trip on 4 October, 09:30 to 12:30, costs 29.95 and 24.95 and passes sandbanks where seals often rest. The centre alone is 17.95 online for an adult. It suits families who want children close to seals and plan ahead of the autumn holiday. • The story behind it: the WEC is the new home of Zeehondencentrum Pieterburen, where seals go from rescue through treatment to release; keepers explain the daily care at 11:30 and 15:00, sometimes in English. • Choosing between the trips: the release trip lasts about three hours and its departure depends on the tide, sometimes morning, sometimes evening, with a short sandbank walk in good weather; the clean-up trip sails 45 minutes to an hour to a dry sandbank for a guided walk of over an hour collecting washed-up objects and litter, then looks for seals on the way back. • Who it suits: all ages are welcome on the release boat, but pushchairs cannot come aboard, so a baby carrier is advised; there is a toilet, and the boat is not wheelchair accessible. • Before you go: if the booking page will not let you select the number of tickets you want, that sailing does not have enough places left. Free donor tickets are only issued at the desk. It is colder on the water than on land, so bring an extra layer. (source 1, source 3)

Work it out: release trip = adults x 85 + children x 55; clean-up trip = adults x 29.95 + children x 24.95; centre only = adults x 17.95 + children x 15.95 online (1 euro more each at the desk). For two adults and two children that is 280, 109.80 and 67.80 euro. For regulars, the annual ticket is 50 euro per adult and 42.50 per child: 50 / 17.95 is about 2.8, so it pays off on the third visit to the centre; donors giving 5 euro a month (60 a year) get unlimited free entry for two, which two adults overtake on their second visit (71.80).
