Pumpkin picking at Bonten in Baexem on 27 September and 4 October: 2.50 euro entry, and the kilo price falls the more you pick

Tuinbouwbedrijf Bonten, a family farm in Baexem in central Limburg known for asparagus and strawberries, opens its pumpkin field for the fourth year: Sundays 27 September and 4 October, 10:00 to 16:00, are picking days among more than a hundred ornamental varieties plus some edible and Halloween pumpkins. Entry is charged from age two and includes the field quiz, bouncy castle, tractor and go-kart track, pumpkin decorating and face painting; what you pick is paid per kilo, and the kilo price drops the more you take. Four quieter picking afternoons follow in mid-October with free entry. It suits families who want children to cut their own pumpkins. Next step: pick a date and bring secateurs and a sturdy bag. • What the field holds: more than a hundred ornamental pumpkin varieties, with picked, edible and Halloween pumpkins laid out in the farmyard; on picking days there is coffee, hot chocolate, squash for children, pumpkin waffles and pumpkin soup. A cart carries your pumpkins from the field to the farm. (source 1)
• The price tiers: up to 5 kg 1.95 euro a kilo, over 5 kg 1.60, over 10 kg 1.40, and single pumpkins over 8 kg only 0.70 a kilo. You weigh and pay when you leave the field, and cards are accepted. (source 1)
• Who it suits: under-twos enter free; the games and stalls on picking days are aimed at children, and a photographer is there for a family autumn photo. If you only want pumpkins, choose the picking afternoons on 10 and 17 October (14:00-16:30) or 14 and 21 October (15:00-17:00), with the same kilo tiers. (source 1, source 2)
• Before you go: the field is about 600 metres from the farm car park and signposted; park only in the marked spaces, not by the field. The farm's 2026 information box says 2.50 euro entry while another line still shows last year's 2.00, so expect 2.50. It is outdoors, so bring boots if it has rained. (source 1)

Work it out: entry = people aged two and over x 2.50 euro; pumpkins = kilos x the tier price. Two adults and two children picking 8 kg: 10 + 8 x 1.60 = 22.80 euro. Watch the tier edge: by the table, 5 kg costs 5 x 1.95 = 9.75 euro, while 5.5 kg costs 5.5 x 1.60 = 8.80, so near 5 kg one more small pumpkin is cheaper; ask at the scale whether the tiers apply to your total weight. A 10 kg Halloween pumpkin at 0.70 comes to 7 euro. If you skip the activities, the picking afternoons charge no entry, saving that 10 euro on the same 8 kg. (source 1)
