What you need to know

A 4-watt bulb producing 840 lumens did not exist as a specification a few years ago. An old incandescent needed 60 watts for roughly 800 lumens, and most ordinary LEDs on the shelf still take 8 or 9 watts to reach 840. The pack of two costs 10.19 euro, and the question is not whether that is cheap. It is what the bulb in your fitting draws right now, because the difference decides everything.

The sum is two steps, and the first number is one you read off the bulb yourself: (old wattage minus 4) x hours on per day x 365 divided by 1000 x your price per kWh = saved per year, and then 10.19 divided by the yearly saving = years to pay back. Two examples that point in opposite directions. Replace a 60-watt incandescent burning three hours a day at 0.35 euro per kWh: 56 x 3 x 365 divided by 1000 is 61.3 kWh, or 21.46 euro a year, and the pack of two pays for itself in under six months.

Replace an ordinary LED you are already using, though, say an 8-watt one at 806 lumens, and you save only 4 watts: 4 x 3 x 365 divided by 1000 is 4.38 kWh, or 1.53 euro a year, and 10.19 divided by 1.53 is about 6.7 years. That is not a good trade, and the old bulb is not even broken. So the honest place for these is the fittings where an incandescent or halogen is still hanging on, or the next bulb that dies and has to be replaced anyway. Not as a swap for a working LED.

One more point has nothing to do with electricity and will still decide it for some people: this is a filament candle bulb, made to be seen. In an exposed socket, a chandelier or a wall light that is the point; behind a shade you are paying for a look nobody sees. The other way round, at 35 millimetres across it fits the small shades and chandelier arms where a fatter bulb will not go.
