Dutch consumer confidence sat at -34 in August against a twenty-year average of -12. Whether a slow cooker saves anything starts with the wattage: the spec table says 210 W, so eight hours is about 1.68 kWh. Bol lists it at EUR 44.99.

What you need to know

Dutch consumer confidence sat at -34 in August against a twenty-year average of -12, and rents were 4.3 percent higher than a year earlier. There is not much in a kitchen you can actually change, but there is one thing you can work out for yourself: which appliance makes the same pot of food more cheaply.

Tristar is the appliance brand of Smartwares Group, and its own site sums the range up as unbeatable basics: no feature stacking, keep the price down. The VS-3920 follows that logic with a 4.5-litre ceramic pot you lift straight out, three heat settings and a glass lid. One thing worth knowing first: the bol listing title says 180 W, while the specification table on that same page says 210 W, and so does the Tristar specification page. Use 210 W for any electricity sum.

On a Saturday you can put a cheap bone-in cut in before breakfast and find it done when you get home. Tristar's own figures are a stew in about three hours, or meat over as much as ten. The trade-off is that slow cooking will not reduce a sauce for you: if you want it thicker, take the lid off for a while at the end or finish it on the hob.

  • For this category 544 reviews behind a 4.5 score is a large sample. The Brabantia 6.5-litre model on the same search page scores 4.4 from 324 reviews, holds more, and draws 320 W.
  • Tristar rates it for up to four servings, so 4.5 litres is not a six-person pot. The cord is 0.8 m, which matters in a rented Dutch kitchen where the socket often sits at the far end of the worktop.
  • Check before ordering that both the inner pot and the glass lid are dishwasher safe on the model you pick, and read the wattage off your own oven's rating plate.

One field note: 210 W for a full eight hours is 1.68 kWh. To see what an oven really costs you instead, find the rating plate on the door frame or the back panel, multiply that wattage by the hours you normally bake for, and subtract one result from the other. Then multiply by how often you cook in a week. No retailer page does that arithmetic for you.
