What you need to know
On a weekend train trip from the Netherlands to Cologne, after the cathedral you may want somewhere with the children that works in the rain. TimeRide's attraction on Alter Markt in the old town takes 45 minutes: a short introduction to 1920s Cologne in a room set up as an old cinema, a walk through a recreated hatter's shop showing the fashions of the time, and then a VR headset and a seat on a historic tram. It is rated 4.7 from 82 reviews on Fever, runs in German or English, and you ask the staff for English when you arrive.
TimeRide is a German company that builds time trips through cities, and its Cologne site lists several routes; Fever sells the indoor SENSEUM. What sets it apart from a VR arcade is its single subject: the streets you see from the tram are Cologne's own in 1926, and the attraction sits on Alter Markt in the old town, so you walk out into the same city today. The official site gives a first tour at 10:00 and a last at 19:00 every day, and Fever sells slots every 20 minutes.
A family should decide where to buy before going: the official reduced price of EUR 17.90 covers children up to 12 and also families of two or more with at least one child, so everyone in that family pays EUR 17.90; on Fever the reduced price is for children aged 6 to 17, students and similar groups, and adults always pay EUR 21.90. For a family, Fever costs more by = number of adults x EUR 4.00: two adults and a child pay 3 x 17.90 = EUR 53.70 on the official site and 2 x 21.90 + 17.90 = EUR 61.70 on Fever. The other way round, an adult student going alone pays EUR 21.90 on the official site and EUR 17.90 on Fever with a valid student card, EUR 4 less. The whole tram ride is in a VR headset, it is not for children under 6, and children aged 6 to 11 must come with an adult.
