Leonardo da Vinci science museum in Milan at EUR 13: his sketches built as models, EUR 8 for ages 3 to 26, EUR 10 more to board the Toti submarine

Flying to Milan for a few days in the autumn break, the worry is a wet day when the children refuse to walk the streets. On Via San Vittore a whole former monastery has been turned into a museum of science and technology, where Leonardo's machine drawings stand as built models and a real submarine sits in the grounds: the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci.

It began with the engineer and industrialist Guido Ucelli, who wanted Italy to have a technical museum like those elsewhere in Europe. After the Second World War he obtained the half-destroyed Olivetan monastery of San Vittore al Corpo, had it restored and opened the museum on 15 February 1953 with an exhibition on Leonardo's science and technology. Today the collection holds more than 16,000 items; the Leonardo galleries show models reconstructed from his engineering sketches, and the S-506 Enrico Toti submarine is displayed outdoors, visible to every visitor. The catch is the submarine. Going inside the Toti costs extra, can only be booked on the museum's own site together with the entry ticket, and since 15 September runs only at weekends and on public holidays; children under 6 cannot board, under-14s need an adult with them, and the cramped interior rules out wheelchair users and anyone uneasy in tight spaces.

• Work out the entry total: total = EUR 13 times the people aged 27 to 74, plus EUR 8 times those aged 3 to 26 or 75 and over; ages 0 to 2 are free. Tiqets and the museum charge the same in each tier, so just enter your group.
• Want the submarine? Buy differently: the museum's full ticket including the Toti is EUR 23 and the reduced one EUR 18, EUR 10 more per person than entry alone. Add EUR 10 per boarder and book on the museum site; this Tiqets ticket covers the museum and temporary exhibitions, not the boarding.
• Avoid Mondays: the museum is closed on Mondays that are not public holidays; Tuesday to Friday 9:30 to 17:00, weekends and holidays 9:30 to 18:30, last entry one hour before closing. Submarine tours run only at weekends and on holidays, 10:00 to 18:00.
