Challenge Lab Brussels, 7 rooms in 60 minutes: a family of four on the group rate saves EUR 14 in the afternoon

On a weekend train trip from the Netherlands to Brussels, the Grand Place, Manneken Pis and the chocolate shops take half a day. If the other half is with children, or with friends who want to move, there is a less sightseeing-shaped option a few minutes' walk from the Grand Place on Rue de l'Ecuyer: Challenge Lab.

It is a real-life challenge game set in an abandoned laboratory: teams of 2 to 6 get 60 minutes to clear 7 rooms of lasers, sensors and brain-teasing missions. The villain is an evil scientist who appears in pre-recorded videos with clues and misdirection, and the final test, called The Decision, ends in a smoke effect. It lasts about 55 to 60 minutes and runs in French, English and Dutch, so no French is needed. The ticket page rates it 4.6 from 558 reviews and lists it from EUR 23.90.

The two lines that come up most in reviews are that it works well as a family and that the time flies. First timers tend to spend the early rooms working out the rules, so do not expect a top score on the first run, and some reviewers found the rooms warm. The limits are clear too: it is for ages 6 and up, under-12s need an adult, and it is not accessible for people with reduced mobility.

• With four or more, check the group rate first. Compare adults x adult price + ages 6 to 17 x concession price against total players x group price, and take the lower. On the Friday checked, an afternoon session was EUR 25.90 per adult, EUR 22.90 concession and EUR 20.90 each at the 4 to 6 group rate: two adults and two children pay EUR 97.60 separately or EUR 83.60 as a group, EUR 14.00 less.
• Afternoons cost less than evenings. From 17:00 the same day, adults were EUR 27.90 and the 4 to 6 group rate EUR 23.90 each. A family of four on the group rate pays EUR 83.60 in the afternoon and EUR 95.60 in the evening, EUR 12.00 apart, and an afternoon slot also makes the train home easier.
• Late can mean lost. The organiser asks you to arrive 10 minutes early and says late bookings may be cancelled without a refund. It is only a few minutes on foot from Brussels-Central, but do not book the slot right after your train arrives.
• Wear the right shoes. Comfortable clothes are recommended and shoes with black soles are advised against (the page does not say why); with laser and physical rooms ahead, a glance at your soles before leaving beats finding out at the door.
