Musée Guimet in Paris at EUR 15: Europe's largest Asian art collection, two adults and two teens pay for two

Take the Eurostar from the Netherlands to Paris and the museum slot usually goes to the Louvre. If what you want is Asia, from Gandhara Buddhas and Khmer stone to the Chinese and Japanese collections, the better match is the Musée national des arts asiatiques Guimet on Place d'Iéna, across the river from the Eiffel Tower. The museum's own website also has a Simplified Chinese version.

The museum was founded in 1889 by the Lyon industrialist Émile Guimet, who set out to build a museum of world religions, and later moved from Lyon to Paris. Today its galleries run by region: Afghanistan and Pakistan, Southeast Asia, the Indian world, the Himalayas, China, Buddhist China and Central Asia, Korea and Japan, and the ticket page calls it the largest collection of Asian art in Europe. One ticket covers the permanent collections and the current exhibition; on the day of checking that is "Trompe-l'oeil Knowledge, Korea (18th-20th Century)", from 16 September 2026 to 4 January 2027. The ticket is EUR 15.00, rated 4.5 from 230 reviews.

The sum to do first is not whether EUR 15 is a lot, but how many of your group need no ticket at all. The museum states that under-18s enter free by showing ID at the ticket check, and that 18 to 25 year-old European Union members are free too, through the desk or an online reservation. With secondary-school children, often only the adults pay.

• Count who actually pays: total = EUR 15 times (people aged 26 and over plus 18 to 25 year-olds who do not qualify). Two adults with a 14 and a 16 year-old pay 2 x 15 = EUR 30, not 4 x 15 = EUR 60. This ticket is sold at full price only, so buy it only for the people who pay.
• Non-EU passport with a Dutch residence card? Check first. The English page says "European Union members" and does not say whether non-EU citizens living in the EU count. An 18 to 25 year-old student on a Chinese or other non-EU passport should ask at the desk with their Dutch residence card before buying, because this ticket cannot be refunded or moved.
• First Sunday of the month is free. The museum opens its permanent collections and exhibitions free on the first Sunday of each month. The next ones are 4 October, 1 November and 6 December; if your dates fit, the whole family pays nothing, at the cost of bigger crowds.
• Closed Tuesdays, desk closes 17:15. Official hours are 10:00 to 18:00 every day except Tuesday, with the ticket desk closing at 17:15 and last entry at 17:30. On a same-day trip from the Netherlands, do not make it the last stop before the train home.
