Tefal Secure 5 Neo 6-litre pressure cooker at EUR 60.96: 1 kg of beef in 10 minutes, rice and beans capped at 3 litres

You get home at seven on a weekday with a 1.2 kg whole chicken in the fridge. The Dutch manual for this 6-litre Tefal pressure cooker (model P2530738) lists 20 minutes of pressure cooking for that chicken, 10 minutes for 1 kg of beef and 7 minutes for rice. On Amazon.nl it costs EUR 60.96, rated 4.5 from 10,342 reviews, in stock and shipped and sold by Amazon; the page shows no struck-through price, so this is not a discount.

Tefal is a cookware brand of Groupe SEB; its Dutch site says it made the first non-stick pan in the 1950s and points to its French know-how in Rumilly and 15 years of repairability. This cooker is 18/10 stainless steel, locks automatically when you open and close it, and its base works on every heat source including induction, which matters in the many Dutch rentals that only have an induction hob. The number to work out is capacity. The manual says ordinary food may fill at most 2/3 of the depth, so 6 x 2/3 = 4 litres; food that swells, such as rice, dried beans and fruit compote, may fill only half, so 6 x 1/2 = 3 litres, always with at least 250 ml of liquid.

Cooking a week of beans or rice for lunches at the weekend therefore gives you 3 litres to work with, not 6; for one or two people looking at the 3 or 4-litre models in the range, the manual is stricter: swelling or mushy food may fill only a third, so a 4-litre pan holds 4 x 1/3 = about 1.33 litres. The other sum is the seal: the manual asks for a new one every year, only an original Tefal ring for your model, and the X90101 ring is EUR 14.48 on Amazon.nl. One comes with the pan, nine more over ten years make 60.96 + 9 x 14.48 = EUR 191.28, or EUR 19.13 a year, and the manual also requires a check at an approved Tefal service centre after ten years of use.
