Middeleeuws Montfort: 400 characters bring a medieval castle back to life
18-19 Jul; 400 medieval roles
Deal Highlights
This is not a few tents beside a ruin: knights, craftspeople, executioner, musicians and a children’s arms school form a working two-day settlement.
Details
The tenth Middeleeuws Montfort runs from 11:00 to 18:00 on 18 and 19 July at Kasteel Montfort near Roermond. It is ticketed with free parking and suits a family history day; buy through the official shop to reduce gate queues.
- The thirteenth-century castle and more than 400 costumed characters share the lead; since 1998 the event has grown into a settlement spread around the ruins.
- Mounted tournaments lead to a battle with dozens of knights and real cannon fire, while chainmail, calligraphy, wood-fired vlaai and historical sword work explain how the world was made.
- Children can enter a kiddy battle, design a family crest, attend knight school and try a pony course; download the programme and prepare for sun, uneven ground and walking.
Hokimi field note: Visit camps and crafts before the battle; armour, weapons and food then read as parts of a living system instead of stage decoration.
