Inventum VDW9030W heat pump dryer at EUR 587: 9 kg and label B, about EUR 11 a year less electricity than its D-rated sibling at three loads a week

On a rainy autumn weekend in a flat without a balcony, the washing ends up draped over the living-room chairs. The Inventum VDW9030W is a 9 kg heat pump dryer, which Inventum says handles the washing of about five people; on the new EU energy label it is class B, using 92 kWh per 100 cycles. On bol it costs EUR 587, rated 4.5 from 21 reviews (17 five-star, 2 one-star), in stock and sold by bol; the EUR 679 on the page is Inventum's recommended retail price, so this is not a discount.

Inventum is a Dutch brand that started in 1908 as a small factory for electrical appliances, first selling electric hot water bottles and irons, and is now based in Arnhem. The water this dryer condenses has two routes: through the supplied drain hose into a drain, or into the machine's own container, which you empty by hand. Several humidity sensors read how damp the load is to decide when to stop, the 14 programmes include down, sportswear and wool, UV light can be added to most programmes, and a quiet function is there for running it at night, at 64 dB.

If you only get to the laundry after work, the delay start lets it finish around the time you get home, although Inventum lists 280 minutes for the eco programme at full load. Whether label B is worth paying for is a sum: electricity per year = kWh per 100 cycles / 100 x loads per year x your price per kWh. Inventum's 8 kg VDW8030W is label C at 96 kWh and EUR 538.07 on bol; the 8 kg VDW8020W is label D at 119 kWh and EUR 489. At the CBS August 2026 average of about EUR 0.2578 per kWh (variable contract price plus energy tax, VAT included) and three loads a week, 156 a year, the VDW9030W costs about EUR 37.00 a year to run and the VDW8020W about EUR 47.86, EUR 10.86 a year apart, so the EUR 98 gap takes about 9 years to earn back; against the VDW8030W the difference is EUR 1.61 a year and the EUR 48.93 gap would take 30 years. The extra money mainly buys one more kilo and a quieter machine, not lower bills.
