What you need to know

Friends or family are in Amsterdam for two nights and you have been handed a day to plan. Open the ticket pages and an awkward fact appears: entry in this city is not cheap, but neither is the pass, and neither side tells you which suits your particular itinerary. The I amsterdam City Card starts at 67,00 euro on Tiqets, rated 4,5 from 386 reviews.

Start with what it actually contains. The official description lists free entry to over a hundred museums and attractions including the Rijksmuseum, H'ART (formerly Hermitage Amsterdam), the Moco Museum and the Rembrandt House; the Heineken Experience, the Johan Cruijff ArenA and the Amsterdam Dungeon come as discounts rather than free entry. For the card's duration it also carries unlimited city public transport, one canal cruise from a choice of operators and departure points, and 24 hours of free bicycle hire. The durations sold are 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours.

Convert it into something comparable using single tickets from the same catalogue today: the Moco Museum with a canal cruise is 32,50 euro and the Rembrandt House with a multimedia guide is 23,50, so those two stops alone come to 56,00 before the Rijksmuseum and before any transport that day. The sum is therefore this: write down the venues you will genuinely enter, copy their current single-ticket prices, add them up, add a day transport ticket, and set the total against 67. Buy only when the total is higher.

  • List before you price: write down the venues you will actually enter that day, copy each current single-adult fare, total them, add a day transport ticket, then compare against 67 euro
  • The clause most people miss: validity runs in hours from first use, not in calendar days. Activating a 24-hour card at six in the evening spends a whole closed night inside the window
  • Work the timing backwards: most museums close around five, so first use is best placed near opening time so that as much of the 24 hours as possible is usable
  • Residents should run a different comparison: this card is built for short, dense itineraries, so someone living here should weigh it against an annual museum pass rather than defaulting to this one

One more distinction worth settling early: free entry and discounted entry are not the same line. Something like the Heineken Experience is only reduced, so if your list is mostly discount items the card is worth noticeably less than it looks. The test is always the total of the free-entry column, never the count of attractions printed on the page.
