Harry Potter: The Exhibition in Brussels runs to 8 November: the family pack saves two adults with two children at least EUR 7

For a Dutch family that wants a day abroad in the autumn break without flying, Brussels is the easiest stop. Harry Potter: The Exhibition is in Hall 2 of Brussels Expo this autumn and runs until 8 November, which covers both the Dutch northern-region break (10 to 18 October) and the middle and southern one (17 to 25 October). This is a touring exhibition built around the films, with characters and elements owned by Warner Bros. Iconic film sets are rebuilt inside, and genuine props and costumes can be seen up close; but what children remember is the hands-on part: a touchscreen magic lesson, pulling a mandrake out of its pot with their own hands, and practising at the Quidditch hoops, while a wristband collects points for your Hogwarts house as you brew potions and cast spells (exhibition site). The organiser gives the visit as about 60 minutes, and the venue is wheelchair accessible throughout.

The price has two layers. The first is date and time slot, because mornings and afternoons on the same day differ. On 19 September we read that on 14 October (a Wednesday) the 10:00 to 12:30 slots cost EUR 22.80 per adult and EUR 12.50 for ages 3 to 12, and EUR 31.90 per adult from 13:00; on 17 October (a Saturday) an adult is EUR 31.90 all day and a child EUR 21.60. The second layer is the family pack: each ticket sits between the adult and child price (EUR 15.90 on Wednesday morning, EUR 24.90 on Saturday), but it needs at least 4 tickets and at most 2 adults. The sum: adults x adult price + children x child price, against total people x family-pack price, and take the smaller. Two adults and two children on a Saturday is 107.00 against 99.60, so the pack keeps EUR 7.40; on Wednesday morning it is 70.60 against 63.60, EUR 7.00. One adult and three children on a Saturday is 96.70 against 99.60, so single tickets are EUR 2.90 cheaper, because every child's ticket in the pack costs more than a child ticket. Under-threes are free and do not count. Sixty minutes is short for a dedicated trip, so pair it with another Brussels stop on the same day; still, for a child who has read the books, pulling out that mandrake is the moment the whole day was for.

• For middle and southern families, on the weekday we checked inside their break, 20 October (a Tuesday), the cheapest are the last two slots from 15:30: EUR 27.30 per adult, EUR 16.90 per child and EUR 20.50 per family-pack ticket; weekday slots run only until 16:00, weekend slots until 18:00.
