Harry Potter studio in London with return coach from EUR 102.67: board at the British Museum on a September weekday and pay EUR 31.53 less than in October

A family living in the Netherlands is planning an autumn trip to London, the children have one non-negotiable stop, the Harry Potter studio, and the adults are left working out how to get there from the city and which day costs least. The studio is in Leavesden, north-west of London, and this Tiqets ticket is entry plus a return coach: you board in central London and a coach with Wi-Fi drives to the studio entrance, about seven hours in total. It is rated 4.5 from 889 reviews on Tiqets, and the same page hides three boarding points with very different prices.

This is the production site where all eight Harry Potter films were made. According to the studio, the crew kept sets, props and costumes because the books were still being written during filming, and the site opened to visitors on 31 March 2012. One of the first sets built for the first film was the Great Hall of Hogwarts, which could seat more than 400 children, appears in seven of the films and now stands permanently in the tour; the House Point Counter behind the teachers' table holds tens of thousands of Indian glass beads. After that come the original Hogwarts Express at Platform 9 3/4, Diagon Alley and Gringotts. From 16 September to 8 November the studio is dressed for its Dark Arts season.

What is worth calculating first is the date and the boarding point. On 17 September we read the next 30 days of prices: boarding at the British Museum, adults pay EUR 102.67 on September weekdays (21, 24, 25, 28, 29 and 30), EUR 111.60 on September weekends and EUR 134.20 on weekdays from 1 October; boarding at King's Cross costs EUR 109.70 every day in September and EUR 134.20 from October; boarding at Victoria costs EUR 150.54 throughout. The sum is simple: total = each adult's price on that date x number of adults + each child's price for their age band. Two adults on a September weekday from the British Museum pay 2 x 102.67 = EUR 205.34; the same trip on an October weekday is EUR 268.40, EUR 63.06 more. Residents of the Netherlands without a British or Irish passport add one more line: a UK electronic travel authorisation costs GBP 20 per person, babies included, usually decided within a day and at most three working days.

• Choosing a boarding point: the King's Cross stop is bus stop T on Pancras Road, right next to St Pancras where the Eurostar arrives, and Tiqets lists it as wheelchair accessible; Victoria boards at 258 Vauxhall Bridge Road and asks you to arrive 30 minutes early; the British Museum option is cheapest but has the fewest departures, with only 10:00 and 12:00 on 21 September. • Going without a coach: the nearest station is Watford Junction, about 20 minutes direct from Euston, Oyster is valid on that route, and the studio shuttle bus from the station takes about 15 minutes and is included in the studio ticket.
