Amazing Oriental 23/09-29/09

Buying Asian produce in the Netherlands, the usual confusion is not whether it is expensive but that one page carries three different ways of pricing. This weekly runs from 23 to 29 September 2026 and all seven items on the page are marked DAG VERS, the daily-fresh line.

Start with the units: This page prices per stuk, per pak and per kilo, so comparing the printed numbers directly gets it wrong. Only the young coconut is sold by the piece, at 1,99 each. Three items are sold by the pack and each prints an approximate weight beside it: enoki at 0,99 for about 200 g, eryngii at 1,10 for about 200 g and solo garlic at 1,99 for about 250 g. Three are sold by the kilo: Shanghai pak choi at 4,50, passion fruit at 5,75 and red dragon fruit at 7,99.

Convert three of the items to one unit and the page becomes readable:

• Enoki is 0,99 for a pack of about 200 g, which is 4,95 a kilo. That makes it the second cheapest thing on the page, barely above pak choi at 4,50. Enoki does not keep: two or three days after opening it turns slimy, so this price suits someone cooking hotpot or soup that week rather than anyone stocking up.
• Eryngii is 1,10 for a pack of about 200 g, which is 5,50 a kilo. It keeps far better than enoki, staying good in the fridge for over a week when left whole, and cut into thick slices and seared it eats close to meat. For one person it is the item on this page that most sensibly stretches across two or three meals.
• Solo garlic is 1,99 for a pack of about 250 g, which is 7,96 a kilo. That sounds like more than double the pak choi, but garlic is used by the clove. A 250 g pack lasts weeks, and solo garlic saves the peeling of small cloves, so what it buys is time rather than money. It sits almost level with dragon fruit at 7,99 a kilo, yet the two empty at completely different speeds.

There is one sum: the pack price divided by the grams printed beside it, times a thousand. Filled in: 0,99 divided by 200 times 1000 is 4,95; 1,10 divided by 200 times 1000 is 5,50; 1,99 divided by 250 times 1000 is 7,96. Now the page sorts from cheap to dear: pak choi 4,50, enoki 4,95, eryngii 5,50, passion fruit 5,75, solo garlic 7,96, red dragon fruit 7,99. The coconut cannot join the list, because no weight is printed: 1,99 buys one of them, not a kilo.

The footer reads zolang de voorraad strekt and foto kan afwijken van werkelijkheid, and alongside them prijswijzigingen, zet- en drukfouten voorbehouden. Together those three lines mean the price on the shelf decides, stock runs out, and the photograph is not the size of the thing. With fresh produce that bites hardest, so going early beats going late.
