ABUS Bordo 6000K folding lock at EUR 69.00: the EUR 79.99 model sits two levels lower

In the Netherlands locking your bike is not a habit question, it is a running cost. A folding lock is lighter than a chain and easier to carry than a U-lock, which is why a lot of people start with the ABUS Bordo range.

The Bordo 6000K/90 opens to 90 cm, measures 64 mm across folded and weighs 1,200 g. The bars are 5 mm specially hardened steel, the cylinder is ABUS's own XPlus disc cylinder, and it ships with two keys and an SH holder that straps on without tools. The interesting part is what happens when you line up three locks from the same range: the cheaper one carries the lower security level. On the same results page the Bordo Classic 5900/90 is EUR 79.99 at level 8, this one is EUR 69.00 at level 10, and the Bordo Granit 6500K/120 is EUR 130.95 at level 15.

• Work out what one security level costs. Going from the 5900 at level 8 (EUR 79.99) to the 6000K at level 10 (EUR 69.00) saves EUR 10.99 and gains two levels. Going from level 10 to the 6500K at level 15 (EUR 130.95) adds EUR 61.95 for five levels, or EUR 12.39 a level. Divide what your bike cost by EUR 12.39 and you have your own ceiling.
• The ABUS level is the brand's own scale, not the one Dutch insurers ask about. Insurers here usually name ART certification, while this listing says ABUS security level 10 and does not mention ART at all. If you are relying on a claim, read which standard your own policy names before you buy, and do not treat the two numbers as the same thing.
• Measure once before you decide 90 cm is enough. Ninety centimetres unfolded has to go round your frame and round something fixed, a lamp post or a bike rack, and whether it reaches depends on how thick that post is. Measure the one where you park most often, then choose between the 90 and the 120.
• 1,200 g is weight that stays on the bike. The SH holder straps on without tools, so those 1,200 g travel with you. If you ride daily it becomes part of the bike; if you only ride at weekends, the basket or a bag is the easier answer.
