From the end of September the Dutch commute starts falling entirely inside the dark. The ride home turns bike lights from a nice-to-have into something you use every single day.

The front lamp is 500 lumens, charges in about four hours and runs four to nine hours depending on the mode; the rear charges in one hour and runs four to twelve. One thing the listing will not tell you before you buy: the flashing mode it advertises cannot be used as your bike light in the Netherlands. The government rule is blunt about it. Neither fixed lamps nor clip-on lamps may blink.

• Work out your own charging interval first. Divide your daily riding minutes by 60 to get hours of light per day. Twenty minutes each way is 0.67 hours; take the front lamp at its worst case of four hours and that is six days, at nine hours it is thirteen. Do the same division for the rear at four to twelve. That number decides whether you charge on Sunday evening or whenever you remember.
• Only two of the four modes are legal here. Front and rear each have steady, long steady, strobe and blink. Under the rule a bike light may not blink, so keep the strobe and blink modes for camping, running or walking the dog and not for the road. Switching mode is one long press of the button, which is easy to catch by accident, so check before you set off.
• Colour and position are in the rule too. White or yellow at the front, red at the back. A clip-on lamp may only be worn on your torso, meaning back and chest, never on your head, arms or legs, and it has to shine straight ahead or straight back with nothing covering it. None of this is about lamp quality; the amounts sit in the prosecution service's Boetebase.
• Do not add a second one. The rule says a two-wheeler may not carry more than one headlight and may not use spoke lighting. So once this set is mounted it is complete, and buying an extra set of spoke lights to be more visible works against you.
