The Zeelandbrug shuts to cars for six weeks from today: detours via N57, A58 and A4, while bikes still cross

The closure is total. The provincial notice states "De Zeelandbrug is tijdens de werkzaamheden volledig afgesloten voor gemotoriseerd verkeer" — not a single motor vehicle for six weeks. The cause sits in the bascule section. The bridge dates from 1965, heavy traffic has grown steadily across those sixty years, and cracks have now appeared in the steel roadway. Crews will repair the cracks first and then lay a steel plate over the deck, work the province says will secure the safety and accessibility of that span for roughly twenty-five years. In other words this is not a sudden failure but a maintenance job with a fixed end date, which is why the dates are worth writing down rather than watching for updates.Source 1

Two details get missed easily. First, cyclists are entirely unaffected: "Fietsers en bromfietsers kunnen de Zeelandbrug gewoon blijven gebruiken", so bicycles and mopeds keep crossing, and emergency transport also retains access. Second, the buses changed. Lines 132, 628 and 629 are withdrawn for the duration, and a free shuttle covers the gap between Colijnsplaat and Kortgene. So "the bridge is closed" means three different things depending on whether you drive, take the bus or cycle.Source 2

For the cost of the detour, use your own car. Motor traffic is routed via the N57, A58 and A4, and the province estimates 25 to 30 minutes extra in normal conditions and about 60 minutes at peak. Take the crossing you normally make, convert it into the detour distance in kilometres, multiply by your own car's consumption per hundred kilometres, then multiply by the price per litre from your last fill. All three numbers are already in your possession and the closure notice supplies none of them. Worth noting: the same detour costs more than it would have last year, because Dutch motor fuel is up 22 per cent year on year against overall inflation of 3,2 per cent.
