Germany's Deutschlandticket at EUR 63 a month: board at Arnhem, Venlo, Hengelo or Enschede, and cancel by the 10th to pay for one month

If the autumn break means a family trip to Duesseldorf, Muenster or the Ruhr, the first sum to do is the tickets. Germany's Deutschlandticket costs EUR 63 a month and for that calendar month covers regional trains (RB, RE), S-Bahn, buses, trams and metros across Germany in second class, though not long-distance ICE, IC or EC trains. What many people living in the Netherlands miss is that four stretches inside the Netherlands are included: German operators run four lines across the border, so boarding at Arnhem, Venlo, Hengelo or Enschede already falls under the ticket and you do not need a separate Dutch ticket to the border. It is a monthly subscription: cancel before the 10th and it ends at the end of that month, so you can buy just one month. Next step: add up the German regional fares you expect to pay this month, then decide.

• The four Dutch boarding points: Arnhem (VIAS RE 19 Rhein-IJssel-Express via Zevenaar, Emmerich, Wesel, Oberhausen and Duisburg to Duesseldorf), Venlo (eurobahn RE 13), Hengelo (eurobahn RB 61) and Enschede (DB Regio via Gronau). The ticket only works on these German operators' trains; if you change to NS or another Dutch operator inside the Netherlands, you still check in and out with your OV-chipkaart.
• Work out whether it pays: value = the single fares for German regional trains and city transport you would otherwise buy this month minus EUR 63. Four rides averaging more than EUR 15.75 (63 / 4) cover it, for example one return trip plus two short city rides. For a single day on a single line, individual tickets are usually cheaper.
• The cancellation date is where people overpay: under DB's rules, cancel before the 10th and the ticket ends that month; cancel after the 10th and it runs to the end of the following month, which is another EUR 63. If your autumn break falls mid-month and you only order after the 10th, compare against EUR 126, not EUR 63. For a family, children over 6 do not travel free with you and each needs their own ticket.
• Check before you travel: the ticket is personal and you must show official photo ID at inspections; you can order on bahn.de, in DB Navigator or on deutschlandticket.de, and a ticket for the current month reaches your phone within minutes. Bikes and dogs need their own ticket, and trains run mainly for tourist or heritage purposes are not included.
