Forty-five pages, valid from Wednesday 9 September to Tuesday 15 September. Dutch flyer weeks do not line up: PLUS, Jumbo, Dirk, Hoogvliet and Action all run Wednesday to Tuesday, while Albert Heijn, Lidl and Etos run Monday to Sunday and Zeeman runs Saturday…

What you need to know

Forty-five pages, opening on Wednesday 9 September and closing on Tuesday 15 September. For anyone recently settled in the Netherlands, the shape of those dates is itself worth learning: supermarkets here do not all change price on the same day.

  • Also running Wednesday to Tuesday: Jumbo, Dirk, Hoogvliet and Action. (source 1)
  • The Monday to Sunday group: Albert Heijn, AH XL, Lidl and Etos. (source 1)
  • Other shapes in the same week: Kruidvat Tuesday to Sunday, Makro Tuesday to Monday, SPAR Thursday to Wednesday, Zeeman Saturday to Friday. (source 1)

Draw those windows on one timeline and something useful about your shopping day appears: count how many chains are on the first day of a new window on whichever day you actually shop. Monday turns Albert Heijn, AH XL, Lidl and Etos over together. Wednesday turns PLUS, Jumbo, Dirk, Hoogvliet and Action over together. Tuesday is the odd one, because it is simultaneously the last day of the Wednesday group and the first day for Kruidvat and Makro. In other words a week holds only two or three real turnover days, and on the rest you are looking at shelves somebody else has already been through.

There is also a practical way to use forty-five pages. Decide how many dinners you are cooking this week first, then open the flyer, not the other way round. In an ordinary working week that usually comes down to three blocks: the fresh food for the two mid-week meals you will actually cook, the frozen fallback for the evening that collapses, and the school lunchbox. Reading for those three blocks separately takes less time than page one to page forty-five, and it is harder to come home with things that belong to no meal at all.

Hokimi field note: a Wednesday opening has one more consequence. The weekend falls on days five and six of this flyer. Anything you want that only gets collected at the weekend has already had four days of other people going through it; conversely, if the thing you want is for the weekend, Wednesday or Thursday is the safe run.
