TESSAN worldwide travel adapter at EUR 23.99: China, UK and US sockets in one, and 10 A times local voltage is the limit

Heading home for the October autumn break or at the end of the year, the suitcase fills up with European plugs: phone, tablet, electric toothbrush, camera batteries. Dutch sockets take round European pins, and in China, the UK or the US the wall looks completely different, while an adapter bought at the airport is usually expensive and fits one country only.

TESSAN is a power-accessory maker from Zhuhai (Zhuhai Tessan Power Technology) that sells a whole row of travel adapters on Amazon.nl. This model, TS-WTA10, stores four sets of pins in the body, European type C, British type G, Australian type I and American type A, and you slide out the one you need; the brand's own page says type I covers Australia, China and Argentina and type G covers the UK and Ireland. The universal socket on top takes 100 to 250 V at up to 10 A, protected by two 10 A fuses, one of them a spare. On the day of checking it is EUR 23.99 (list price EUR 26.99), in stock, dispatched by Amazon, rated 4.7 from 6,976 ratings.

On a Eurostar work trip to London, when the hotel has a single British socket by the bed, being able to run the laptop charger and a few USB cables at once is where it pays off. It has two hard limits. It changes the plug shape, not the voltage, so a hair dryer marked 220 to 240 V still cannot be used in the US. And on USB the brand page lists two USB-A ports at up to 12 W each and two USB-C ports at up to 15 W each, 20 W in total, so a laptop that needs 45 W or more cannot charge over USB-C and needs its own charger in the universal socket. The Amazon text still says three USB plus one USB-C, but the photos on the same page label the ports A1, A2, C1 and C2; go by the photos and the brand page.

• Work out what the universal socket can carry: limit = 10 A times the voltage at your destination. The listing's own figures are 2,500 W at 250 V and 1,100 W at 110 V. Add up the wattage of everything you will run from that socket at the same time (it is on the label of each charger or appliance) and keep the total under the limit.
• Then check the USB budget: all four USB ports share 20 W. Add up what the devices you charge together need; phone fast charging often wants more than 15 W, so here it simply charges at normal speed, which is not a fault.
• Compare it with the 35 W model that costs EUR 13 more: the TS-WTA02 on the same page is EUR 36.99 and supports 35 W fast charging over USB-C. If you only carry a phone and earbuds, the EUR 23.99 model is enough; the extra EUR 13.00 only makes sense if you want to fast-charge a thin laptop or tablet over USB-C.
• Read every label before you fly: devices marked INPUT 100-240V work directly in a 110 V country like the US; devices marked only 220-240V work in China and the UK but not in the US.
