The SEVERIN Spuma 500 (SM 3585) induction frother is EUR 90.49 on Amazon.nl, rated 4.3 from 2,209 reviews; SEVERIN lists it at EUR 109.90, sold out. The sum: 90.49 divided by your café-versus-home gap per cup.

What you need to know

A rainy October Sunday morning, and a latte means putting on a rain jacket and cycling to the café and back. If you already have an espresso or capsule machine at home, what you are usually missing is only the milk foam. The SEVERIN Spuma 500 (model SM 3585) is an induction milk frother that 2,209 Amazon.nl reviewers rate 4.3 on average, shipped and sold by Amazon.

SEVERIN builds its frothers as one Spuma range, Spuma Lite, Spuma 500, Spuma 700 and Spuma 700 Plus, which differ mainly in capacity and temperature control; the one with step-by-step control between 45 and 65 degrees is the 700 Plus. The 500 sits in the middle: 500 watts and three programmes, hot foam, cold foam and hot chocolate. It heats by induction, which SEVERIN says means milk cannot burn onto the base, and the stainless steel jug goes in the dishwasher; an LED ring glows red for hot and blue for cold, and it beeps when done.

The break-even sum: 90.49 / (the price of the cup you usually buy - what one cup costs you at home) = the number of cups until it pays for itself. The home cost is your milk price per litre times the amount you use, plus one shot of coffee. A gap of EUR 3 pays back at about the 31st cup (90.49 / 3 = 30.2); a gap of EUR 2 takes 46 cups. Before you calculate, look at the official quantities: 120 to 260 ml of milk per frothing run, and up to 500 ml when only heating. That 120 ml is a floor, so even one small macchiato starts at 120; if the whole household wants foam, the 260 ml ceiling means two rounds. After an autumn-break afternoon outdoors, when the children want hot chocolate, the third programme earns its place: SEVERIN says whole pieces of milk chocolate can go straight in to melt, and the lid has an opening for adding cocoa along the way.

  • Compare the two prices: EUR 90.49 on Amazon.nl, sold by Amazon with 30-day returns; SEVERIN's own shop lists the same model at EUR 109.90 (was EUR 149.90) and shows it as sold out, so Amazon is EUR 19.41 cheaper. The page also offers an Amazon RetourDeals "used, very good" unit at EUR 58.11, which is a returned item, not this new one. (Amazon.nl listing, SEVERIN shop)
  • It suits people who already have a coffee source (espresso machine, capsule machine or moka pot) and drink several milky coffees a week at home; it does not make coffee itself. If you mostly drink oat or other plant milk, note that the official page says nothing about plant milk for the Spuma 500, while the 700 Plus is the model in the range described as suited to it, with adjustable temperature. (SEVERIN frother range)
  • SEVERIN's shop states a 2-year guarantee; the same Amazon page also carries other versions, such as one with 13 programmes and an OLED display and an electric 700 ml model, so check that "induction 500ml" is the one selected before ordering. (Amazon.nl listing)

Hokimi field note: for one week, write down how many cups you actually buy out, then put that into the sum above. Two cups a week at a EUR 3 gap pays back in about 15 weeks; if your answer comes out at more than a year, this machine is a treat rather than a saving for you, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying.
