The 19 August update shows minimal SARS-CoV-2 levels in wastewater, Infectieradar, GP and laboratory surveillance. Recent weeks may still be incomplete.

What you need to know

When a child or adult starts coughing, “COVID is very low nationally” can easily become “this cannot be COVID”. RIVM’s 19 August update is more careful. Wastewater surveillance, Infectieradar reports from the general population, consultations for respiratory infection at general practices and virological laboratory surveillance all indicate minimal SARS-CoV-2 levels. Agreement across several systems makes the national trend more credible, but it does not diagnose an individual and does not rule out influenza, RSV, rhinovirus or another respiratory pathogen. Wastewater surveillance receives samples from more than three hundred treatment areas, while the national average is now based on weekly sampling from roughly forty percent of treatment plants. Data for the most recent weeks may also be incomplete because reporting arrives later. Hokimi’s judgement is that the update should reduce unnecessary alarm, not remove basic responsibility. A symptomatic person should still avoid exposing vulnerable people, and severe or persistent symptoms still need medical advice.

  • RIVM updated the page on 19 August 2026.
  • Wastewater, population, GP and laboratory systems all show minimal levels.
  • National surveillance cannot diagnose the cause of one person’s cough.
  • The most recent weeks may be incomplete because of reporting delay.

Hokimi field note: Rest, ventilate and reduce close contact with vulnerable people while symptomatic. Contact a doctor for breathing difficulty, altered consciousness, persistent high fever or marked deterioration. Read the latest graph points with caution because reporting can still be incomplete, and do not equate minimal with zero.
