Quntis 41 cm monitor light bar at EUR 41.64: EUR 11.30 over Basic buys the remote and auto-dimming

Once the clocks go back at the end of October, it starts getting dark outside the window soon after four. Working from home, the screen is still bright but the keyboard and the paper on the desk disappear, and switching on the ceiling light puts a glare patch on the screen.

Quntis has been making monitor light bars for around ten years, and this 41 cm Basic Pro (model LI-HY-0214-BK) is its most reviewed bar on Amazon.nl. It clips onto the top edge of the monitor, and its 78 LEDs use a 45-degree asymmetric optic that lights only the desk and not the screen, so there is no reflection. Brightness runs steplessly from 5 to 100 percent and colour temperature from 3,000 to 6,500 K, with an ambient light sensor for auto-dimming and a two-hour break reminder, controlled by remote (two AAA batteries included) or by touch keys on the bar. The clamp takes screens up to 9 cm thick, curved ones included. Helping a child with homework in the evening, or watching one episode with just a small light on, the bar can be dimmed almost to nothing and turned warm without lighting the whole room the way a ceiling lamp does. Its limits are just as concrete: it rests loosely on the top edge and can be knocked crooked, and some reviewers report failures within two months, so use the 30-day return window to test it for a few evenings.

• Choose the length by screen size. Quntis's own rule is the 40 cm class up to 24 inches and the 50 cm class above 24 inches. This bar is 41 cm, so up to 24 inches; with a 27-inch or ultrawide screen, look at the brand's 51 cm curved bar (EUR 58.99 on the day of checking).
• Price the four styles against each other. On the same page Basic is EUR 30.34, this Basic Pro is EUR 41.64 and Basic Plus is EUR 47.59. Basic Pro costs EUR 11.30 more than Basic and adds the remote and auto-dimming. Reviewers say the touch keys mean reaching up to the screen, so on a deep desk with a distant monitor the EUR 11.30 earns its keep; with the screen at arm's length it can be saved.
• Give it 5 V at 1.5 A. The brand page says the 40 cm class needs a 5 V 1.5 A supply, at most 7.5 W. If it looks dim on a monitor or old laptop USB port, try a charger rated 1.5 A or more before assuming the bar is faulty.
• Work out a year of electricity with 7.5 W times hours a day times working days divided by 1,000 times your tariff. Eight hours on 220 working days is 13.2 kWh; at EUR 0.30 per kWh that is at most about EUR 3.96 a year, less when dimmed.

Hokimi tip: once it is on, rotate the head back until the light stops just at the front edge of the keyboard.
