What you need to know

If you're a graduate from a Dutch university, a PhD holder, or a researcher, you can look into applying for an 'Orientation Year' residence permit starting next week. This permit is designed to give you time to find work or start a business in the Netherlands after completing your studies or research.

This residence permit allows you to stay in the Netherlands for up to one year after graduation to seek employment or entrepreneurial opportunities.


  • ✓ Who can apply: Individuals with a Dutch degree, a designated overseas master's degree, or who have completed a research project in the Netherlands.
  • ✓ Requirements: You must apply within 3 years of completing your studies or research. If applying online from within the Netherlands, you need a valid residence permit, BRP registration, and a BSN.
  • ✓ Processing time: The IND's decision period can take up to 90 days, so it's advisable to prepare all documents well in advance.

⚠️ Before applying, carefully verify if you meet all the criteria and ensure your BRP, BSN, and current residence permit are still valid. The IND's last update was on 12 June 2026, but always check the official page for the most current policy details.
