What you need to know

The last weekend of August opens the national cultural season. DE OPENING is the successor to the Uitmarkt, hosted this year by Eindhoven, which takes over from Apeldoorn, and it runs from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 August with more than 200 listed activities spanning theatre, live music, dance, visual art and installations around the city. The official site is explicit that the programme on the main stages in Eindhoven is freely accessible. At that point most people start looking up trains to Eindhoven. In other words this is a weekend built around one host city while also spreading across the country, which means the starting point for the decision is not the timetable at all but the map of what is already happening where you live.

Hold off. The same official text carries a more valuable line: the programme also takes place at affiliated municipalities and institutions across the whole country, and the interactive map in the official app exists precisely to show the part near you. That replaces the question entirely. It is no longer whether a trip to Eindhoven is worth it, but how far your local programme falls short of the Eindhoven one, and whether that gap is worth the price of a return fare. Note the scope too: only the main stages are described as freely accessible, while items at participating institutions have to be checked one by one in the app, so the phrase free festival is broader than what the organisers actually wrote.

  • Open the map in the app first and narrow it to your own city. If something you already wanted to see is listed, this weekend costs you nothing
  • If you do travel, divide the return fare by the number of items you will genuinely sit through to get a cost per item, then compare that with what a similar performance costs at home. Lower means go, higher means stay
  • Eindhoven Centraal is about a five-minute walk from de Markt and about ten from Stadhuisplein, so arriving by train adds no local transport cost on top
  • Driving in, the organisers advise the edge-of-city P+R sites: Meerhoven if you come from the A2 towards Den Bosch or the A58 towards Tilburg, and Genneper Parken from the south, because central parking will be tight across the three days

Hokimi field note: pull the word free apart. What is free is admission to the main stages, not your day. The real cost is travel, and travel is the one cost you can drive to zero by checking the local programme first. That is why the order matters: map first, train times second. The official statement is at source 1 and the travel and P+R arrangements at source 2.
