What you need to know

Dutch rail fares have moved in one direction for years, and the PrijsTijd Deal that NS has just launched is one of the few that moves the other way. The rule itself is simple. Travel in the off-peak, book a single journey at least one day ahead, and the system calculates a discount from the expected crowding on the date and departure time you choose. The earlier you book the larger it gets, up to a month in advance and up to sixty percent, with an extra reduction for travellers aged 12 to 17. The official page states that nearly every journey between NS stations qualifies, on any route with enough quiet trains. What deserves attention first is what it does not do: it is not available on the OV-chipkaart, it is not sold as a subscription, and there is no Dagretour version. It serves journeys you can fix a day in advance, not the daily commute.

  • The reduction is not a flat percentage. It is derived from expected crowding on your chosen date and departure window, and NS gives sixty percent as the ceiling. (source 1)
  • Three hard limits: no OV-chipkaart, no subscription, no Dagretour. None of a card-tapping commute is covered.
  • The latest you can buy is the day before departure and the earliest is a month ahead. A journey decided on the morning cannot reach this price.
  • It applies to single journeys only. A return is two separate purchases, each of which has to fall in the off-peak and each of which has to be booked a day ahead.

Hokimi field note: open last month's rail spending and count how many journeys were not commuting and could have been fixed a day earlier, such as visiting family, a weekend trip or a hospital appointment. Only those can carry the reduction. Add up what those journeys cost, multiply by the discount, and that is the ceiling on what this changes for you in a month. If the answer is a single-digit number, your travel pattern does not suit this fare and it is not worth rearranging trips for.
