nijntje looks at the sky: a first landscape tour for young children

When a four-year-old looks at a landscape painting, the first discovery is often something an adult has missed: what a cloud resembles, where a road might lead, or whether the wind is moving. The “Land en lucht” family tour on 12 August begins with that kind of attention. The route first explores Dutch landscapes in Centraal Museum, inviting children to describe land, sky, distance and weather in their own language. It then enters the 360-degree projection room at nijntje museum, where Boris, umbrellas and bold colours surround the room and turn a still image into an environment experienced with the whole body.

Dick Bruna created nijntje with very few lines and colours, yet insisted that children should be able to read the picture for themselves. This tour carries that respect into historical landscape painting. Rather than hurry toward a correct interpretation, it begins with noticing, comparing and imagining. The programme is designed for children aged four to six together with adults, and it starts and finishes at Centraal Museum. That is why the meeting address is Agnietenstraat 1, not simply the nijntje museum entrance. A reservation is required; participation is included with Centraal Museum admission.
