Primary-school children travel by silent boat, then use nets, lenses and identification cards to examine aquatic life.

What you need to know

From a boat, a river can look like one unbroken surface. Put a dipping net into the bank and empty it into a tray, and the same water separates into small lives that swim, crawl and hide. Utrechts Landschap’s Kindervaart first takes primary-school children from group three aboard the nearly silent Pont on the Kromme Rijn. A guide explains the rich nature in and beside the river. After a short cruise, the boat moors and children use nets, magnifiers and identification cards to analyse what they have found. In two hours, scenery seen from a distance becomes a field investigation made by hand.

The Kromme Rijn was once an important branch of the Rhine and helped shape the land, water management and estates east of Utrecht. A quiet boat is more than a comfort: with little engine noise, bird calls, reeds and movement on the surface become easier to notice. Children must be accompanied by adults and wear the life jackets provided. The Pont also has a wheelchair lift and room for two wheelchair users. This is therefore not a thrill ride but a small journey that connects movement, a landing and careful ecological observation.

  • Wednesday 12 and 19 August, 14:30-16:30; each trip lasts about two hours.
  • For primary-school children from group 3; adult €8, child through age 12 €3 and supporter €5.
  • Advance reservation is compulsory; an adult accompanies each child and children wear the supplied life jackets.
  • Follow signs from Grotelaan 16, 3981 HC Bunnik to the workshed and excursion centre meeting point.

Hokimi field note: bring a light layer, sun protection and shoes that may get wet, keeping hands free for the net. Animals are observed briefly and returned according to the guide’s instructions. Families needing wheelchair space should confirm it after booking.
